Understanding SEO rankings

A ranking is the position of a page for a particular search in a particular context. It is useful evidence, but it is not a complete measure of SEO success.

Rankings are not universal

Results can vary by location, device, wording and the searcher's context. A page may rank well for an educational query and poorly for a service query because those searches require different content.

Visibility includes more than one blue link

Search pages can contain maps, images, videos, summaries and other features. Track impressions and clicks for the actual query set rather than relying on one manual search.

High position does not guarantee value

A broad phrase may bring visitors who leave quickly, while a focused lower-volume query produces qualified enquiries. Connect ranking data with landing-page behaviour and customer outcomes.

Diagnose changes carefully

  • Was the page changed, redirected or made inaccessible?
  • Did competing pages become more useful or more current?
  • Has the search intent shifted?
  • Are several pages on the site competing for the same topic?
  • Is the apparent change normal reporting variation?

Improve the page, not the number

Use ranking movement as a clue. The action should still be to strengthen relevance, usefulness, structure or accessibility.
